FLIGHTS OF NOSTALGIA

FLIGHTS OF NOSTALGIA IN CLASSIC WINGS’ DE HAVILLAND DRAGON RAPIDE (OR) TAKE TO THE SKIES IN A TIGER MOTH

It is usually not very easy for you to take a flight in aircraft participating in Duxford’s air shows but there is one splendid exception: the de Havilland Dragon Rapide owned by Classic Wings.

The Dragon Rapide was the most successful British airliner of the1930s and 40s and was also extensively used by the RAF and Royal Navy during the Second World War. The Rapide was an improved derivative of the original DH Dragon and first flew in 1934. It became the most common airliner on British domestic services as well as a widely used commercial aircraft throughout the world. It remained in widespread use well into the 1950s and in some areas into the 1960s. During the Second World War a number of civil Rapides were pressed into military use although a dedicated military version, the DH89B Dominie, was produced from 1939 in training and communications versions. In the immediate post-war period surplus Dominies were converted into Rapides to meet the demand for pleasure, charter and feeder operations around the world. Total Rapide and Dominie production reached 748 by the time production ceased in 1945.

Go and see the Classic Wings team on the flight line in front of the American Air Museum and find out about taking to the air in one of these fine aircraft. They also offer pure flights of nostalgia over London, flying at just 1,500 feet, taking in the landmarks along the way, or alternatively, take a trip over Cambridge, Ely, Newmarket and Madingley.
